Mount Meru is one of Africa's highest and most beautiful volcanoes. The route to the summit passes through parkland, mountain forest, a giant heather zone and moorland.
Finally, the summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge which provides
stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand feet below in the
crater and Kilimanjaro in the background, a truly breathtaking sight.
A sleeping bag and mat are required for the huts, staying at the Momella
Lodge is an optional extra.
Momella lodge is located in Arusha Park, this is a tough walking trip with
some steep terrain,
but it is well worth the climb. DAY 2: After breakfast, we leave Meriakamba for the Saddle hut. It is the second hut and it is between the Big Meru and the Little Meru.
The walk takes about 5-6 hours partly in the forest and partly in the
moorland. Lunch is enjoyed along the way, dinner and
we will stay
at the Saddle hut.
After a short celebration, we then trek back down to the Saddle hut for
lunch and then continue to Meriakamba for dinner and stay there for the
night.
